Bulldogs Rock Crimson Tide

Last night’s championship game proved to be one for the ages in college football. Under the bright lights at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, he Georgia Bulldogs walked away with a stomping 33-18 win over Alabama.

Headed into the game as underdogs, Georgia didn’t let their 41-24 loss against Alabama in early December get in their head. They used their consistently strong defense to keep pressure on Alabama’s quarterback Bryce Young all night. The first sign of weakness came when Alabama’s team leader, Jameson Williams, had to leave in the 2nd quarter due to a knee injury.

Going into halftime the score remained close, 9-6, with Alabama leading. The first touchdown came in the third quarter when Zamir White from Georgia dove into the endzone bringing the score to 13-9. With Alabama consequently fired up, they drove the ball to the 5-yard line but ended up having to settle for a field goal. Not long after, Stetson Bennett (originally a walk-on and Georgia QB) ended up fumbling the ball early on the next possession resulting in a quick turnover. This time Cameron Latu (Alabama) caught a short touchdown pass from Young, bringing the score back up to 18-13 Alabama. As Bennett was determined not to let his previous fumble be what costs his team the title, he throws a spectacular 40-yard pass into the end zone that Adonai Mitchell receives for their second touchdown.

With just over 8 minutes left in the 4th quarter, the Crimson Tide defense gets sloppy while the Bulldogs remain strong the rest of the way. Georgia goes on to score two more times and secures their championship victory. It proved an emotional moment for Kerby Smart (Georgia Coach) and the whole team as they win their 1st national title since 1980.

Being Nick Saban’s 2nd largest loss as head coach, he stated how proud he was of his boys, but was “[s]ad we didn’t finish the way we needed to finish.” He also stated that if he was going to lose to anybody, at least it was to his former assistant, Kerby Smart.

Overall, it was an exciting and very close game till the end. I think many people were happy to see the underdogs, or rather Bulldogs, walk away with such a monumental win.
